Post Treatment Care
Depending on the lesion
treated, immediately following the laser treatment, the area may have a
blue/red discoloration called purpura.
During the time the purpura is present (5 days – 2 weeks), the area must
be treated delicately. Some swelling,
discomfort, and in a small number of cases, crusting may develop within this
time frame also. With any of these events, adhere to the following
instructions:
- Apply soothing cream or ointment to
keep treated areas soft.
- Do not
rub, scratch, or pick at the laser treated area.
- Avoid
pressure or friction from tight clothes.
- Wear sunscreen with an SPF of
15 or higher every day.
- Harsh soaps, drying topical
preparations, and shaving should be
avoided while the treated area is healing, as this may aggravate
the treated area.
- When
washing the treated area, avoid rubbing with a washcloth,
and gently pat the area dry after washing.
- Ice wrapped in a soft cloth may be applied for swelling or
discomfort.
- 1% hydrocortisone ointment is
also beneficial for any redness or
swelling noted.
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be
taken for discomfort. Avoid
Aspirin and all aspirin type products.
- An opaque
or camouflage makeup may be desired to cover any
purpura or bruising. Be
sure to gently remove makeup to avoid
increasing the chances of scarring to the treated area.
- If
crusting develops that requires a dressing, please contact
the office.
Note: With any post
treatment purpura, the lesion may look as it did before the treatment or
worse. After your laser treatment, it
can take 6-8 weeks or longer before clearing of the lesion is noted.

(When indicated, before laser vein treatments can begin, a

1) If instructed/needed, come to the office ˝ to 1 hour
before your scheduled appointment to have a topical “numbing” gel applied.

if areas will be exposed to sunlight.
4) Wear white underwear on the day of your treatment if we
will be treating the upper thighs.
5) Bring support hose or ace bandages with you on the day of
treatment, if available.
